Miniature painting was practiced in North India from the 16th through the 19th century. It was influenced by Mughal
painting and by earlier Indian styles. It illustrates a variety of Hindu subjects, including 'music' paintings (ragamala),
secular works (e.g. hunting scenes), legendary epics and romances, and particularly Krishna’s adventures and deeds.
The paintings are characterized by lyrical landscapes, fluid, graceful depictions of the human form, and vibrant colours.
